If you live in a city where the air is polluted, everybody gets more chance to become ill. And mild asthmatic children (5-7 years) have about 20% more problems (coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing) with asthma in a city with polluted air. In 1952, London had heavy smog (polluted air), this resulted in 4000 deaths. Because of this accident, governments all over the world finally paid attention to air pollution.
Acid rain is an effect of air pollution. Acid rain can poisen drinkwater, ruin the harvest from farmers, damage aquatic life and erode buildings.
Air pollution can cause cancer, birth defects, head ache, disorientation, decreased muscle coordination, worse sight and genetic mutations. Air pollution can give effects that you feel like you have stress, have smoked and drunk alcohol. Children have in avarage more problems with air pollution than adults.
Since some time there is a 'hole' in the layer of ozone around the world. The ozone layer protects us from some kinds of light, like ultraviolet. Because of this hole in the ozone layer, more ultra violet comes to the earth. Too much ultraviolet light, can cause cancer. So in fact, ultraviolet is a new kind of air pollution.
The polluted air is bad for the environment. Polluted air contains mostly a lot of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Like we saw on Al Gore's film 'An inconvenient truth' the carbon dioxide has all to do with the rising temperature. However there are also people who don't agree with Al Gore and say that the rising temperature is standing apart from the rising amount of CO2 in the air.
